Guelph Police Daily News Release – 24Feb2017

Sexual assault arrest

On the afternoon of February 23rd at approximately 4pm, a teenage girl was walking in the area of York Road and Watson Road when she was approached by a man that she did not know. The man sexually assaulted her and quickly ran off. The young woman was not physically hurt in any way and police were immediately contacted with a description of the suspect. That suspect was located a short time and distance away by police and arrested for sexual assault.

Twenty-one year old Don Ekanayake of Guelph was later released and is to appear before a Guelph court on April 4, 2017.

Man arrested while cashing stolen cheque

On the afternoon of February 23rd , police were at a Macdonell Street business investigating an unrelated fraud matter when staff alerted them to a man that was in the store trying to cash a stolen cheque. Police approached the male and investigation confirmed that the cheque in question had been stolen from a Glasgow Street business that was broken into earlier in the week.

The 34 year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with fraud under $5000, utter a forged document, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of fail to comply with probation. He was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Suspicious case investigated

Management of a Paisley Road business became concerned when a customer reported a suspicious suitcase that was left in a parking lot shopping cart corral over the noon hour on February 23rd . Police were contacted and in the interests of safety, the area around the suitcase was cordoned off. Members of the Explosive Disposal Unit from the Waterloo Regional Police were requested for equipment to x-ray the suitcase. The x-ray revealed that there was nothing in the suitcase.

Aggressive driving leads to drug arrest

At approximately 9:50pm on the evening of February 23rd, police observed a grey Honda Civic travelling at a high rate of speed and in an aggressive manner in the area of Stevenson Street and Eramosa Road. The vehicle was stopped and investigation of the driver and a passenger resulted in the discovery of a quantity of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The 43 year-old Guelph driver was arrested and charged criminally with drug possession as well as red light-fail to stop and fail to properly wear seatbelt under the Highway Traffic Act. He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court later today.

Passed-out male investigated

Police received a call about a male that appeared to be passed-out in the vestibule of a Woolwich Street business just after 2am today. When police located the man and spoke to him, investigation revealed that he was fine, but was in breach of a curfew condition to be in his residence. The 23 year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged for breach of undertaking and is to appear later today in bail court.

Traffic enforcement

The numbers for February 24th show that there were 67 vehicle stops performed that led to Highway Traffic Act charges being laid against 42 drivers.

On February 23, 2017 the Guelph Police Service responded to 254 calls for service.
