Guelph Police Daily News Release – 21Mar2017

Shoplifter assaults security staff

Just before 7pm on March 20th, security staff at the Stone Road Mall approached a male that had been previously banned from property. The male came to the attention of staff when he took merchandise from a store in the mall and left without paying. When security staff approached the male to apprehend him, he assaulted one of the security officers. The security officer received minor injury from the assault.

Police arrived and the male was taken into custody. During the search of the man, a quantity of a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine was found and further investigation learned that he was also bound by a number of conditions from previous criminal charges.

The 21 year old Guelph man is charged with assault, theft, possession of stolen property, two counts of breach of probation, drug possession and trespassing. He was held in custody to appear in bail court today.

Theft of copper wire

With prices that can hover around $3 or higher per pound for scrap, copper wire has always been a sought after target for many thieves. Yesterday the GPS reported on a break and enter that occurred over the weekend and involved the theft of wiring from transformers at a Johnston Street business. A second incident was also reported to police yesterday on Gosling Gardens where a home under construction was entered sometime over Saturday or Sunday night and approximately $500 worth of copper wire was taken.

Police would like to encourage people to be extra vigilant if you live in areas where homes are actively being built or are being renovated. Please call police immediately if you see any suspicious activity after normal business hours where these thefts routinely occur.

HVAC unit catches fire

On March 21, 2017 at approximately 12:58 AM the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the above noted location, Linamar Corporation Linex Manufacturing. Units from Imperial Rd, Speedvale Ave, Wyndham St, Elizabeth St, and Clair Rd arrived on scene and found a roof top HVAC unit on fire. Heavy smoke and heat filled the building and all employees were evacuated.

The fire was quickly brought under control and subsequently extinguished. Guelph Police Services and Guelph Wellington Emergency Medical Services also attended.

There were no injuries to any of the employees or firefighting personnel.

The cause of the fire along with an estimate of the damage is still under investigation. Fire prevention was contacted and will be investigating.

Traffic stop leads to drug charge

At approximately 2:20am, police were performing speed enforcement on the Hanlon Expressway when a silver BMW was observed travelling at 47 km/hr over the posted limit. The investigating officer stopped the vehicle and made several observations that lead to the 18 year old driver being arrested. A quantity of marihuana and drug paraphernalia was located inside the vehicle.

Sharif Kamal El-Din of Locust Hill was charged with possession of a controlled substance and released to appear in Guelph court on May 2, 2017.
