Guelph Police Daily News Release – 11May2017

During the evening hours of Wednesday 10 May, 2017 a member of the Guelph Police Traffic Unit was making observations in the area of Stone Road and Edinburgh Road South. This area saw a large gathering of car enthusiasts during the previous weeks as a result of a local car club advertising Wednesday night “meets” on social media.

On Wednesday 03 May, 2017 this area had been monitored by officers from Guelph, OPP, and the Ministry of the Environment after complaints had been received from tenants of a commercial property. The officers were present in support of Project ERASE, a province wide safety initiative that concentrates on street racing activities and unsafe/illegal motor vehicle modifications.

At approximately 9:55pm the officer observed three motor vehicles travelling westbound on Stone Road (from Edinburgh Road) at a high rate of speed and engaged in what appeared to be racing activity.

They turned onto the Hanlon Parkway and one of the vehicles was a white Subaru which accelerated away from the other two but then was forced to stop at a red light at Downey Road.

When the light for southbound Hanlon Parkway turned green, the white Subaru accelerated from the stopped position and proceeded southbound at a high rate of speed (followed by the officer who was operating an unmarked vehicle). After travelling a short distance the Subaru registered a radar reading of 145 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone and was stopped north of the Laird Road overpass.

The 20 year old male driver, a resident of Guelph, was charged with Speeding (145km/h in an 80 km/h zone) and Perform Stunt – Exceed Speed Limit by 50 or more km/h. He will be appearing in the Guelph Provincial Offences Court in July.

In addition, the motor vehicle operated by this driver was seized for a period of 7 days. His driver’s licence has been suspended for the same period of time.

This is the type of behavior that the ERASE program is intended to combat and our officers will continue to take a zero tolerance approach to this dangerous activity.

Break and enter arrest

On May 8th, video recording equipment captured a male forcing the parking garage door in a Quebec Street building and taking property. Police viewed the video and were able to identify the male. The male was then located when he was reported as a suspicious person in a Gordon Street building on the morning of May 10th. He was arrested at that time and a search found him in possession of a number of items of stolen property.

The 22 year old Guelph male is charged is total of 16 criminal charges including break and enter, possession of identity documents and breach of probation. He was held in custody to appear in bail court today.

Stolen vehicles recovered

It was reported earlier in the week that a Nissan Titan truck and a Nissan Murano were stolen from the same drive on Cityview Drive. The following day the Murano was recovered by the GPS drug during an investigation and the Titan truck was also recovered yesterday in the parking garage at the Stone Road Mall.

On May 10, 2017 the Guelph Police Service responded to 223 calls for service.
