The Guelph Police Fraud unit would like to warn all residents of a phone scam from
an international phone number (859-342-0526). The caller will claim to be from their Financial Institution and will tell the victim that there may have been fraudulent activity on their bank account.
The caller will then ask for account holder information such as date of birth, mailing address, user names and passwords and may even ask the victim to log into their online banking account so they can gain access to it.
People should not respond to these communications. Financial Institutions will not proactively call account holders and request this information over the phone. Further, they will never contact an account holder and ask them to log into their online banking.
If you do receive this type of a call simply tell them you believe it is a fraud and contact your Bank directly to confirm that there has been no fraudulent activity on your account.
If you have responded to this type of a call and have provided personal information be sure to notify your bank and change your online banking password.
Further, you should notify Equifax (www.equifax.ca or call 1-800-465-7166) and Trans Union (www.tuc.ca or call 1-800-663-9980) to have an alert placed on your credit report.
If you have become a victim of fraud, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by email at [email protected] or call 1-888-495-8501 to report it.
