Guelph Police Daily News Release – 09Jan2017

Traffic related incidents dominated the weekend

It seemed to be a busier than normal weekend for traffic enforcement with police stopping over 160 vehicles in relation to how they were driving in the cold weather conditions. Traffic tickets were issued in 108 of those traffic stops and that number should act as a reminder to slow down and drive in a way that reflects winter conditions. Not respecting those conditions potentially can lead to serious consequences for yourself and others on our roadways.

Collisions

Police investigated 24 motor vehicle collisions over the weekend with minor injuries reported in six of those. Provincial offence charges were laid in 11 of the vehicle collisions.

There were also 11 complaints reported and investigated about how people were driving their motor vehicles.

Impaired driving

– One of the driving complaints received by police was that a vehicle was swerving all over the road in the city’s north-end. Police located the vehicle on Elmira Road and resulted in the arrest of its 35 year-old Kitchener driver for impaired driving, drive over .08mgs and additional charge of breach a condition of his undertaking from a previous criminal charge that is still before the court.

Kevin Robertson was released and is scheduled to appear before the court on January 20, 2017.

– In the early morning hours of January 8, 2016 police observed a vehicle stopped on the side of the road in the south with one of its occupants hanging out the doors vomiting. When police stopped to make sure everything was alright, they found that the driver was impaired.

Gareth Browne, 21 years of age of Milton was arrested and charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired and over .08mgs. He was released and scheduled to appear in court on January 24, 2017.

Arrest leads to additional charges

On the evening of Friday January 6, 2017 police located a 25 year old Guelph man at the downtown Transit Hub who was wanted for previously breaching terms of his probation. When he was apprehended and taken to the station, he was found to be in possession of drugs and was further charged with drug possession and another count of breaching his probation.

Stewart Letts of no fixed address appeared before the court and was released to return back to court later in January.
