There has not been any amount of significant snow this season, but a snap-shot of driving habits yesterday with a minimal amount of snow on the roads certainly suggests that drivers will need to adjust their driving habits as we brace for what weather forecasters are advertising as the first weekend with consistent snow fall accumulations.
Yesterday the Guelph Police Service responded to fifteen accidents that resulted in charges being laid in 6 instances with speed and weather conditions playing a factor in the majority of them.
Directed speed enforcement for selected periods of time in the areas of Victoria Road/Dakota Drive, Watson Parkway and a school zone on Stephanie Drive resulted in 18 speeding tickets issued and another 8 warnings issued to drivers about their driving.
The Guelph Police Service wants to remind all drivers that wet, cold and snowy roads have a definite impact on how you should drive, especially with respect to your speed. Please do not drive over the posted limits and allow for more time to reach your destination, give yourself a greater following distance with other cars to allow yourselves to stop safely and invest in winter-rated tires that have been shown to reduce stopping distances and provide more traction in winter conditions.
We all have apart to play with the safety on our roads and it starts with recognizing the driving habits need to change with the season as well as being patient and respectful of other drivers.
Impaired driver
Shortly before noon on December 8, 2016, police were alerted by a north-end business that a customer had arrived at the business and appeared intoxicated. When police arrived and spoke to the man who was driving the vehicle, the observations of the business were confirmed. The man failed a road-side breath test at the scene, was arrested and also failed a follow-up test at the station.
Craig Noble of Guelph was charged with drive over .08mg and 2 counts of suspended drive. He was released to appear before the court on Dec 23, 2016.
This is a fine example that shows the impact that we all can have on road safety. If you do see anyone operating a motor vehicle that you believe is impaired, please contact immediately.
