On April 5, 2017 at approximately 8:16 pm, members of the Guelph Police Service, Guelph Fire Department and Guelph Wellington Emergency Medical Services attended to a working house fire on Glenholme Drive. The fire was controlled and there were no serious injuries received but there is extensive damage to the residence. A Fire Prevention Officer was called in to assist with the investigation and at this time the fire is being treated as suspicious. This incident is still under investigation.
Break and enter arrest
At approximately 1am this morning, a Woolwich Street resident witnessed a male breaking into his building’s storage shed and quickly called police. Police were provided a description of the male and when he was located a short distance away, he ran from police. After a short foot pursuit, the man was apprehended.
Shane Dickson, 42 years of age from Guelph was charged with break and enter as well as trespass by night. He was later released with a date to appear in court on May 16, 2017.
Man found unconscious
Security staff from the Stone Road Mall called police to assist them at approximately 10:20 am on April 5th when they found a man in one of the washrooms that was unconscious. There was a substance believed to be heroin, a syringe and other drug paraphernalia with the man. The man did regain consciousness and Guelph Wellington Emergency Medical Services were also called to provide medical assistance and then transported the male to hospital.
Further investigation revealed that there was an outstanding arrest warrant for breach of probation for the 27 year old Guelph man. Later that afternoon after he received proper medical attention, the man was released from the hospital and arrested by police for the outstanding warrant and was also further charged with possession of a controlled substance. Henok Getahun was later released to appear in court on May 23, 2017.
Three youths arrested
On April 5th at approximately 6:30pm, police were alerted to youths that had taken garbage from a near-by dumpster and were throwing it throughout a Walnut Street park. Police arrived and saw this behavior themselves and when police tried to approach them, they ran off. They were all apprehended in short order about the neighbourhood. Two of them were found to be in possession of marihuana.
All of the boys were 15-17 years age and were charged with a combination of mischief, breach of probation and possession of a controlled substance charges. Two were released to appear in court at a later date and the third one was held to appear in bail court.
Theft suspect located
On December 31, 2016 and again in the afternoon of April 5th there was theft of alcohol thefts from an LCBO outlet in the city where the suspect was recorded on video. Investigation lead to police identifying the suspect who was then seen by officers later that day at approximately 7:50 pm at the downtown Transit Hub. The 28 year old Guelph man was arrested and when he was searched, he was found to be in possession of a quantity of drugs believed to be methamphetamine, oxycodone and marihuana. He is charged with two counts of theft, 3 counts of drug possession and four counts of breach of probation. He was held in custody to appear in bail court today.
