Graffiti On Lions Pavilion Could Result In 10 Year Prison Term

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) – On Sunday March 20, 2016, members of the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were requested to attend the Kinsmen pavilion at the sport fields behind the arena in Mitchell, where graffiti was discovered.

Investigation revealed that symbols and the initials .E.A. and the letters GOS were spray painted on the doors of the pavilion. In addition white spray paint was applied to the building’s block walls and wooden panels. The damage will require many resources to remove and repair.

The graffiti damage may have been there for some time as the building is not utilized during the winter months.

The damage done to the pavilion is “mischief”, as it is willful destruction and damage to property. It is a Criminal Code offence and may be punishable by a prison term of up to 10 years.

The Kinsmen Service Club will now have to pay the expensive cost for the removal and repair of the damage. Spending money on cleaning up this senseless damage takes away the clubs financial ability to support the many community activities and infrastructure funding they are involved in.

The graffiti must however be removed, as graffiti left unchallenged suggests a community that is apathetic about its appearance and most often leads to more graffiti being applied.

The Perth County OPP is requesting anyone with information about this graffiti damage to contact them at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), and you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000
