Fuel Siphoned From Gas Tank

(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Tuesday February 21, 2012 Perth County OPP officers in Listowel were called to a residence on Main St. West by a vehicle owner who reported theft of gasoline from a vehicle fuel tank.

The owner advised that between late Monday evening February 20 and early Tuesday morning the car was left parked near a residence under a street light. The vehicle was locked and not entered, however the gas door was open and the gas cap was located on the ground. It appeared that a quarter of the fuel was siphoned from the tank.

The Perth County OPP wishes to remind the public that it is not a bad idea to consider installing a locking gas cap. Even fuel doors that open remotely or with a key are flimsy and easily compromised. Avoid parking in dark isolated areas (especially for extended periods). At home, park in a locked garage where possible. If you don’t have a garage, park as close as possible to the house and avoid parking on the street. If you must park on the street or in a parking lot attempt to locate your vehicle so the fuel door is visible to you or other residents in the area.
