Flying Garbage Can Takes Out Motorcyclist And Passenger On Hwy 8

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Saturday July 09, 2016, around 11 a.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to a collision involving a car and motorcycle, along Hwy 8 west of Stratford.

Upon police arrival it was determined that a Hyundai SUV towing a utility trailer travelled westbound on Hwy 8 ahead of a westbound motorcycle. A garbage can blew out of the utility trailer, landing on the roadway directly in the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle operator made an evasive manoeuvre but the can blew into the motorcycle causing the rider to lose control. The motorcycle slid sideways across the eastbound lane where it came to rest. The motorcycle operator, a 40-year-old male from the Municipality of West Perth sustained minimal injuries. The 47-year-old female motorcycle passenger a Stratford resident also sustained minimal injuries. They were both transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The 46-year-old female driver of the Hyundai, a Township of Perth East resident has been charged with “insecure load”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

All drivers carrying loads must ensure that their loads are bound, secured, contained or covered. The load must not become dislodged or fall, leak, spill or blow from the vehicle.
