Five Injured In Two Vehicle Crash

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) On Sunday August 26, 2012, at approximately 11:46 a.m., Perth County OPP officers were dispatched to a serious two vehicle collision at the intersection of Perth Line 44 and Perth Road 135 (south of Rostock).

Upon police arrival, an extensively damaged 2007 Dodge Caliber sedan and a 2003 Ford Windstar van were located on private property north-west of the intersection. The Windstar had come to rest on its roof on the lawn while the Caliber remained upright and was located in flower gardens. The debris of both vehicles was scattered throughout the intersection.

The lone occupant of the Caliber, a 24 year old male from the Township of Perth East sustained minimal injuries and was treated at the scene. The four occupants of the van, all Kitchener residents were transported to Stratford General Hospital. The 38 year old female driver, the 18 year old female passenger and the 10 year old male passenger were treated for their minor injuries. The 8 year old female passenger was subsequently transported to London Victoria Hospital where she is being treated for non life threatening injuries.

Investigation revealed that the driver of the Ford Windstar drove her vehicle west bound on Perth Line 44 through the intersection without stopping. The Dodge Caliber was being driven north bound on Perth Road 135 (the through road), when it struck the Windstar in the middle of the intersection.

The 38 year old female driver of the Windstar has been charged with “disobey stop sign, fail to stop”.

This crash is another example of the dangers posed by motorists who do not “stop and look”, when crossing through roads at stop sign controlled intersections. Drivers are urged to pay extra attention at our rural intersections especially with the corn and other vegetation obstructing sight lines. This collision had the potential to be a fatal in nature.
