Owen Sound, Ontario – Thursday April 2, 2015 – On Wednesday April 1, 2015 the Owen
Sound Fire and Emergency Services responded to two house fires.
The first incident occurred at a west side home due to a contractor using spray foam
insulation adjacent to a gas fired hot water heater. The fumes from the spray foam
insulation were ignited by the pilot light on the hot water heater. The contractor assisted by
the responding crew limited the damage to the floor joist space where the foam had been
sprayed.
The second incident occurred on Alpha Street when a crock pot was placed too close to a
stove top element that had been unintentionally turned on causing the apartment unit to fill
with smoke. Thankfully, no one was home at the time of the fire.
Unattended cooking is the leading source of ignition in home fires and the second leading
source in fatal fires. With the upcoming holiday weekend, the Ontario Fire Marshal would like
to remind all Ontario families that when you are cooking, always stay in the kitchen.
The Owen Sound Fire & Emergency Services would like to remind you that smoke alarms are
required on every level and outside each sleeping area. It is the law. Working smoke alarms
save lives.
Carbon monoxide alarms are required in all homes with a fuel fired appliance on April 15,
2015. It is the law.
