Exeter Man Caught Robbing Canadian Tire

On October 13, 2009 shortly after midnight Huron OPP officers received a 911 call following an alarm call at the Canadian Tire store in Exeter. The key holder of the store went to the Canadian Tire location on Thames Road after being contacted by his alarm company. Upon arrival he found the building was insecure and feared someone may still be inside. The key holder then called 911 to update police of the situation and he moved his vehicle around the corner and out of sight of the suspect should he/she emerge from the store. The key holder then stated that he could see a male exit his store with a bag in hand. A direction of travel was provided and the caller followed the walking suspect from a safe distance. Officers arrived quickly and were directed to the suspect who was identified by the key holder. The suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of property from inside the store as well as break in instruments.

A 35 year old Exeter man is now facing one count of Break & Enter, one count of Theft Under $5,000, one count of Possession of Break in Instruments, one count of Mischief Under $5,000, one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and one count of Breach of Undertaking. The man remains in police custody pending the results of a Bail Hearing on October 13, 2009. LP09261279

NOTE that the key holder in this situation did exactly the correct thing by NOT entering the insecure store. All too often key holders arrive at an alarm call before police and they enter the location to check it out. Although most alarm calls are false, some are not and clearing a location is best left to police to handle. A suspect who gets caught or surprised by an owner may injure the owner in their attempt to flee.
