Enforcement In Constructions Zones – 7 Sign Charges Laid

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) – Road construction is a regular and necessary activity Canadian Motorists face during the summer months.

This summer is no exception, and as usual numerous road construction projects are underway in Perth County. To ensure the safety of construction workers and the general public, speed limits have been reduced in some designated road construction zones. Some locations have barricades and detours in place allowing for a safe and smooth traffic flow around these sites.

The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is dedicating resources to increase their patrols in construction zones and the by-passes around them.

One of the construction zones is Ontario Road in Mitchell where barricades are in place and some of the traffic is detoured around the downtown area. Officers have been monitoring the traffic flow and have utilized the appropriate enforcement action.

Between Friday July 10, 2015 and Wednesday July 15, 2015, the following Highway Traffic Act charges have been laid by officers at this location:

– 2 charges of “disobey sign”

– 5 charges of “disobey stop sign, fail to stop”

During the early hours of Sunday morning July 12, 2015, an OPP officer on bicycle patrol observed 3 males moving construction site barricades on Ontario Road in order to redirect or block traffic. The males were each charged with “remove or deface barricade, light or notice”, contrary to the Public Lands Act.

When approaching or travelling through construction zones watch for the designated safety person that directs the flow of traffic, be extra cautious and slow down. Obey the detours and the construction signage. Be aware that vehicles ahead of you could stop unexpectedly. Do not watch what is being done to the road and avoid other distractions.

Drivers should also be aware that while driving through constructions zones speed fines are doubled and criminal charges may apply if a worker’s safety in endangered by your driving. Remember that they are working to make our roads better and they have families too.

Concentrate on your driving!
