Email Scam Warning

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On April 12th, 2012 at 11:25 am, the South Bruce OPP received a report of an email scam from a resident in the Municipality of Brockton. The email, supposedly sent by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), was sent to advise the recipient that their account would be deactivated in 24 hours due to a number of unsuccessful login attempts. To keep the account active, simply click on a hyperlink provided in the body of the email. This was correctly identified as a scam and no response was sent. The South Bruce OPP is sending another warning to all area residents to be wary of unsolicited contact by email, phone or at the front door. Canadians are defrauded of billions of dollars each year, which is why the scams continue to operate. If you receive a call, letter or email that appears to be from a legitimate company like the CIBC, take the time to verify that it’s genuine, before you respond. You work hard for your money, don’t hand it over to a con artist. Anyone interested in more information on fraud can call the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or visit them online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
