Email Scam Alert – Canada Revenue Agency

(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On November 29th, 2011 at 3:08 pm, the South Bruce OPP received a report of an attempted email scam from a resident of Arran-Elderslie Township. The email, sent by “Canada Revenue Agency”, advised of a $350 payment owed due to an error in the previous year’s income tax. In order to collect the refund, the recipient was told to fill in a claim sheet which asked for personal information including Social Insurance Number and VISA card number. The South Bruce OPP is asking area residents to verify any request for personal information before sending a response. “Technology allows scammers to become more creative and move convincing which is how they take millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims each year. If something seems too good to be true, then take the time to verify what you received. Don’t hand your hard earned money over to a con artist”.
