(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Friday January 09, 2014, the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was contacted by an elderly Listowel resident who requested advice from police about money that was sent to their grandson who was in trouble.
Investigation revealed that couple in their eighties received a telephone call from a male who said he was their grandson. The male used their grandson’s name and sounded very convincing. He told them he was in a holding cell of a Quebec police station, as he was arrested for something related to impaired driving. He also spoke to the grandparents about a surgery he was to undergo of which they were aware. This fact made everything believable and they sent $900 to a Quebec post office as instructed by the caller.
The grandparents became suspicious about this entire situation and contacted the OPP. They were advised to contact their grandson and verify everything that had been told to them. Their grandson confirmed that this was a scam.
Investigation is continuing into the possible recipient and address where the money was delivered.
