Drunk Driver Caught At St.Marys RIDE Check

(ST.MARYS, ON) – On Saturday evening November 14, 2015, Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) Program on Queen Street East in St.Marys. This RIDE program was conducted as part of their year round traffic safety program.

At 10 p.m. a West bound blue Suzuki car entered the RIDE program and the driver was spoken to by police. Police detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage emitted from the driver’s breath. A roadside breath test was administered on the driver which he failed. The driver was taken to the Perth County OPP Detachment in Sebringville where he also failed Intoxilyzer breath tests.

51-year-old Michael ZAJKO of Innisfil has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offence:

– Driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and has a court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice in Stratford on November 30, 2015, where he will have to answer to the charge.

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his motor vehicle has been impounded for a period of seven days.

The public is reminded that while RIDE checks can be conducted at any place any time, the “2015 Festive RIDE” Program will commence at 12:01 a.m. on Monday November 23rd, 2015, and end at midnight on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016.

During this Festive RIDE initiative the OPP and Municipal Police Services will be working together with the goal of saving lives by reducing the number of impaired drivers on our roads. The Perth County OPP will be teaming up with Stratford Police Service on Friday November 20, 2015 for a joint “Festive RIDE” kickoff in Stratford.
