Driver Shot By Police In Kitchener

Waterloo Region, ON– On Thursday March 2, 2017 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Waterloo Regional Police Service were investigating a driving complaint and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Ottawa Street South and Lilac Street, in Kitchener.

As a result of the interaction with the driver, the officer discharged their service firearm. The male driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries after being shot by police. The involved officer was not injured as a result of the interaction.

Ottawa Street South between Courtland Avenue and Mill Street has been closed for investigation. There is no access to Ottawa Street South from Acacia Street, Lilac Street and Grenville Street.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and invoked their mandate. As required by law, no further information can be provided by Waterloo Regional Police at this time.
