Driver Flees Traffic Stop – Arrest

On Wednesday September 19, 2012, at 11:09 p.m., a member of the Guelph Police Traffic Unit stopped a motorist for speeding on Edinburgh Road South, Guelph. During the course of the traffic stop, the officer noticed the strong odour of burnt marihuana and he advised the occupants they were under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance and the driver quickly accelerated away at a high rate of speed avoiding arrest. A brief pursuit ensued, but the officer stopped due to public-safety concerns.

A short time later, the passenger was located and a search incident to arrest revealed that he was in possession of a small quantity of marihuana and he was charged accordingly.

On Thursday September 20, 2012, the driver turned himself into Police.

A 23-year-old male from Rockwood was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The driver, a 23-year-old Guelph resident was charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight from Police, Resisting Arrest and Speeding.

Both will appear in court in November 2012.
