Driver Caught Going 145 in an 80 Near St.Marys

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) – On Thursday, August 11, 2016, around 2:30 p.m., a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting patrols along Perth Road 139 South of Line 4 (West of St.Marys), when a fast moving northbound Honda CRV was observed. The officer activated the police radar and locked in the Honda’s speed at 145 km/h which is 65 km/h above the posted 80 km/h speed limit.

The vehicle was pulled over and a 47-year-old male from London was issued a summons for “race a motor vehicle”. The male is to appear at Stratford Court on September 13, 2016 to answer to this charge. His driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and his vehicle was impounded and towed from the scene.

The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
