Don’t Veer For Deer

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) The Perth County OPP would like to remind motorists to use caution on the area roadways and watch for wildlife. From Friday, November 2, 2012 to Sunday, November 4, 2012 the Perth County OPP were dispatched to 8 motor vehicle crashes involving deer.

Collisions with these animals have increased, as deer are venturing across roadways as part of their mating movements. Local farmers are also actively harvesting their corn and hunters are scouting out bush areas which may cause movement in the deer population. Most of these collisions occurred around sunrise and sunset. No vehicle occupants were injured in these collisions however some vehicles were extensively damaged.

During the early morning hours of Saturday November 2nd, police responded to a single motor vehicle crash on Line 37, Perth East Township. It was discovered that a 17 year-old male driver from Perth East Township had swerved to avoid a collision with a wild animal, causing him to lose control and the vehicle to roll. The driver was shook up, however no injuries were reported.

The slogan Don’t veer for deer” is something to keep in mind. Brake firmly but safely when you notice a deer in or near your path
