(South Huron, ON) At approximately 7:30 pm on August 17, 2009 police were advised of a single vehicle, fail to remain collision on Bluewater Highway just north of Grand Bend. The motorist who called in the collision stated that the suspect vehicle was being driven aggressively. He also stated that the driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle on the gravel shoulder, spun off the roadway and struck a tree. The motorist also watched as five occupants exited the vehicle then jumped back in and fled eastbound on Dashwood Road with no apparent injuries. Huron OPP officers patrolled in the area but were unable to find the vehicle.
Updated information was sent to neighbouring police services, as the motorist successfully recorded the correct licence plate on the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was later found by an off duty Waterloo Regional Police Officer and a Cambridge OPP officer. The driver, a 22 year old Waterloo man, was identified and charged with one count of Careless Driving, one count of Fail to Remain at the Scene of a Collision and one count of Drive Motor Vehicle No Currently Validated Plate. He will return to Goderich Provincial Court on October 1, 2009 to answer to his charges.
