The Owen Sound Police Service responded to a violent domestic assault this morning on the city’s east side.
Owen Sound Police Service Inspector Stephen MacKinnon stated, “At 9:41 a.m. the Communication Centre received a 9-1-1 call from a woman stating she could hear people screaming in the apartment next to hers and something about a man with a knife. When she looked out into the hallway she saw a female bleeding from a wound to her neck.â€
Uniformed officers responded immediately to 955 10th Street East where they found a male in the hallway. He was covered in blood and female was trying to keep him from going back into his apartment. The female advised the officers that the male had stabbed her daughter who had managed to run back into the apartment and lock the door. Officers immediately took control of the male then attended to the victim inside the apartment.
The 26-year-old Owen Sound woman stated she had been stabbed by her partner but was able to get the knife away from him and get back into their apartment. The victim was transported to the Grey Bruce Health Services – Owen Sound site by ambulance where she underwent surgery for her wounds.
The victim’s mother was also taken to hospital to repair cuts to her hands suffered as she tried to wrestle the knife away from the male. She has been treated and released.
“Members of the Forensic Identification Branch continue to process the crime scene, while officers from the Criminal Investigation Branch continue the investigation. I can tell you that 49-year-old Desmond Williams was arrested at the scene and transported to the hospital by ambulance suffering from [what appear to be] self-inflicted wounds to his abdomen and throat,†said MacKinnon.
The victim is in stable condition in hospital and fortunately has been able to speak briefly with her mother and family. The accused also underwent surgery and remains in hospital in stable condition.
“We are very thankfully the victim was not killed in this assault. Mr. Williams will be charged with one count of attempted murder and will be brought before the Courts some time next week,†said MacKinnon.
At this point the motive for the assault is not known.
