Domestic Dispute Ends in Shotgun Display

On Thursday December 4, 2013, shortly after 7:30 pm the Owen Sound Police Services responded to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of 5th Avenue West in the city of Owen Sound.

Information was received by a 911 communicator that the domestic incident had escalated to the point where a 59 year old male party of the residence was brandishing a firearm while his wife and adult son had barricaded themselves into an upstairs bedroom.

Upon police arrival the complainant advised that a shot had been discharged from the firearm. Police were able to make contact with the male party who subsequently surrendered himself. Evidence appears to show that the male party discharged a large fireworks device to simulate the sound of the shotgun being discharged to further intimidate his wife and son. The double barrel shotgun that the suspect had been carrying at the time of the incident was seized as evidence by Police.

The male party has been held for a bail hearing this morning in response to the following criminal offences: assault with a weapon, weapons dangerous and careless use of a firearm.

Sergeant Rusk of the Owen Sound Police Service stated “fortunately there were no injuries sustained by any of the involved individuals as police were able to resolve the situation peacefully.”
