Dog and Human Fall Through Ice

Location: SNYDERS FLATS RD and SAWMILL RD, WOOLWICH ON Canada

At approximately 8:30 a.m. a male and female had attended the area of Snyder’s Flats just west of Bloomingdale to walk their dogs. During their walk the male’s dog ran out onto the ice, broke through the ice and fell in. The male followed after his dog, was able to retrieve the dog out of the water however fell in the water himself during the process. The male was fully submerged in the water and unable to touch the bottom. The male was properly dressed for the outside weather; however the snowsuit in which he was wearing became heavy, and made it more difficult for the male to pull himself out. At approximately 8:43 a.m. the female who was with the male contacted emergency services for help. Police, Emergency Medical Services, volunteer firefighters, and Kitchener Fire Department arrived on scene at approximately 8:50 a.m. As police and volunteer firefighter reached the point where the male had gone through the ice, the male had managed to pull himself out. The male was immediately taken into the on scene ambulance where he received treatment, and later transported to Grand River Hospital for monitoring. The dog was safe, and looked after by the female. The male was in the water for approximately seven to ten minutes.
