(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – A distracted driver has been charged with Careless Driving following a single motor vehicle collision that took place during the early morning hours of December 6, 2017.
Shortly after 2:00 a.m. Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Huron County Paramedic Services responded to the crash scene located on Base Line near Londesboro Road. Upon arrival they located a damaged Dodge Caravan in the ditch along with five occupants.
Two adult females were transported to hospital in Clinton for treatment; they were later released with minor injuries.
Investigators determined the driver was heading southbound on Base Line when he took his eyes off the road to find a place to put out his cigarette however he was unable to do so. When his gaze returned to the roadway his vehicle had now entered onto the gravel shoulder and struck the guard rail. At that point he overcorrected and his van subsequently left the roadway and struck the ditch on the east side of the road.
The male driver, a 26-year-old from Huron East was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Careless Driving.
