(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On June 29, 2012 at 9:45 pm, a South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer on patrol along Scott Street in Walkerton observed a distracted driver operating a black Chevrolet GM4. The vehicle was stopped and 48 year old James GATEMAN of West Grey Township was charged with Drive while using hand held device. On October 26th, 2009, it became illegal in Ontario for drivers to drive while distracted by items such as a cell phone. Distracted driving has quickly become a significant contributor to serious crashes on the highway that can’t be tolerated. Driver’s that continue to ignore the danger and drive while distracted face a roadside fine of $155, or a maximum fine at court of $2,000. If a distracted driver causes a serious crash, the costs are much greater. When you’re driving, keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Don’t let your next conversation be your last.
