On April 5, 2014 police responded to Bleams Rd and Helena Feasby Street in the city of Kitchener to respond to two youths who had fallen through the ice. The two youths had been playing near the edge of the pond when the ventured out and both fell through leaving them unable to escape the cold water. An area resident observed the incident and made his way to the pond. The resident entered the water to retrieve both youths. Other neighbours in the area came to assist until emergency medical services arrived. The air temperature and wind chill values were below zero degrees and the pond was approximately 80% ice covered. Upon police arrival both youths were completely wet and frightened. The youths were sheltered by police until the arrival of EMS. Both youth were transported to Grand River Hospital for precautionary treatment of hypothermia and shock. Both parents arrived on scene and were advised of the incident and of the emergency medical services being provided. Police strongly suggest everyone stay away from any type of body of water regardless of the size due to hazardous spring conditions.
