Dan Needles coming to the Lucknow Library

The Lucknow Branch of Bruce County Public Library is pleased to announce a free evening of comedic stories by author and playwright, Dan Needles. Dan’s presentation entitled, “Land, Culture and Farmer Thinking”, will take place on Friday, September 25th at 7 pm.

Dan is perhaps best known for his Wingfield plays and stories about the goings on of Walt Wingfield and his neighbourhood in Persephone Township. Last year, Lucknow’s HAWK Theatre presented Dan’s play, The Perils of Persephone, to rave reviews.

Before turning his hand to writing plays, Dan worked as a journalist, speechwriter and insurance executive. He spent a lot of time exploring the world, too. After high school, Dan worked for a year milking cows and chasing sheep in the backcountry of Australia. He piled lumber in a sawmill in northern British Columbia for a summer and spent another cycling around England and France exploring battlefields, serving beer in a pub and picking agricultural crops. Dan found permanent employment in 1974 as editor of the Free Press & Economist, a small town weekly newspaper near the family farm in southern Ontario. There, he created a column called Letter from Wingfield Farm, which became the basis for later stage plays. Since 1988, Dan and his wife Heather have made their home at Larkspur Farm in Simcoe County, within sight of Georgian Bay and the Niagara Escarpment.

“Words cannot express how pleased I am to be able to present an evening like this for the community of Lucknow,” says Lucknow Library Branch Supervisor, Grant Robertson. “Like a lot of people, I have been a big fan of Dan’s work, so to be able to have him come and speak at the Library is a real thrill. This night would not be possible without the dedication of the Bruce County Public Library and our modern library service, and the help of HAWK Theatre, who will be providing us with the use of the theatre for this event”.

Tickets will be available through the Library on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be no charge for the tickets, however, donations are welcome. Interest in the event has been high and seating is limited, so book yours today by emailing the Lucknow Branch Library at [email protected] or by calling 519 528-3011.
