Daily News Release – Saturday, March 28, 2015

The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 112 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Five people were arrested and one was held for a bail hearing.

Warrants

On March 3, 2015, Chatham-Kent Police attended a business on Richmond St, Chatham, to investigate a theft complaint. Video surveillance was obtained and the identities of the two male suspects were confirmed by Police. However, neither of the males had a fixed address and warrants were sought after for both parties. On March 18, 2015, the 19 year old male was located and arrested in the area of Orchard Heights, Chatham. He was later released with a future court date.

In the evening of March 27, 2015, Chatham-Kent Police located the other wanted male in the area of Lisgar St, Ridgetown. The 18 year old male was arrested on the strength of the warrant and transported to Chatham-Kent Police Headquarters. He was later released with a future court date, with conditions and a 9PM curfew.

Dangerous Driving

Just before 11PM on March 27, 2015, a Chatham-Kent Police Officer observed a Dodge Dakota being operated erratically on Park St, Chatham. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver didn’t initially stop, until the officer was able to perform a blocking tactic. Once the vehicle was safely stopped, the driver was still uncooperative, refusing to unlock the door and exit the vehicle as instructed. Eventually, the driver cooperated and was taken into custody.

The 18 year old Chatham man was charged with Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, and later released with a future court date.

Impaired Driving

Shortly after 3AM on March 28, 2015, a Chatham-Kent Police Officer observed a Dodge Journey traveling at an abnormally slow rate of speed along Richmond St, Chatham. The Officer conducted a vehicle stop to investigate further. Upon speaking to the driver, the officer detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath. When questioned, she admitted to drinking a quantity of beer earlier. Subsequently, a breath test was conducted with a Roadside Screening Device, which registered a FAIL. She was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police Headquarters, where further breath tests were conducted by a Qualified Breath Technician.

After two suitable breath samples were collected and analyzed, the female was found to be well over the legal blood alcohol concentration levels, on both samples. The 25 year old Chatham female was charged with Over 80, and later released with a future court date. The driver also received and automatic 90 day licence suspension and received an automatic 7 day vehicle impoundment.

The Chatham-Kent Police reminds citizens to consume alcohol responsibly and plan ahead. On average, programs, fees, and fines incurred throughout an impaired/over 80 charge can total upwards to $10,000, to get your licence fully reinstated. Also factor in lawyer fees and severely increased cost of insurance.
