Cyclist Suffers Serious Injuries After Being Struck By Vehicle

Incident #: WA16225462

Incident Date: Oct 12, 2016

Location: VICTORIA ST N and DUKE ST W, KITCHENER ON Canada

On October, 12, 2016, at 7 a.m., Waterloo Regional Police responded to a report of a cyclist struck by a car on Victoria Street North, near Duke Street, in Kitchener. A 25-year-old Kitchener woman was waiting to turn left on her bicycle from Victoria Street, onto Duke Street, when she was rear-ended by a 64-year-old Kitchener man who was driving a grey Saturn. The impact caused the cyclist to be thrown to the ground on the other side of the intersection. She was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries to her head. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet. Police closed the area in both directions for three hours while they investigated. The driver of the car has been charged with careless driving and failing to share the roadway when meeting a bicycle. Police want to remind the public that while the Highway Traffic Act does not make it mandatory for adults to wear helmets on bicycles, they are strongly recommended. Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to call police at 519-653-7700 ext. 8793.
