(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP has been investigating reports of “near misses†at area crosswalks. While it’s the pedestrian that always suffers, sometimes tragically, it’s not always the driver’s fault. The South Bruce OPP wants drivers and pedestrians to follow some basic rules at crosswalks to enhance pedestrian safety:
Pedestrians:
Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights. Don’t cross in the middle of the block or between parked cars
Make sure drivers see you before you step out on the road
Cross only when traffic has come to a complete stop
Cross only on a green light, not a yellow or red
If the “Don’t Walk†signal starts to flash, don’t cross the road
Watch for vehicles turning at intersections
Watch for vehicles entering or leaving driveways
Wear bright clothing during low light conditions
Drivers:
Be patient, especially with an older pedestrian that may need more time
Stay alert and slow down on residential streets
Be extra careful when driving in a school zone
Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning
When a pedestrian crossing signal is activated – stop and let them cross
Fines for offences at pedestrian crossings, school crossings or crosswalks are $180 plus 3 demerit points. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled in a Community Safety Zone.
Parents and care givers are asked to discuss safe crossing with their youth.
