(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Cell phones, cameras, GPS Systems, wallets, purses, identification, leather jackets, helmets, power tools, golf clubs, change, satellite radios, and an ignition interlock device. You are enjoying a nice day at the beach and you hop into your car to head home when you notice your wallet and keys are stolen. Maybe you have just completed a long day at work and you hop into your truck only to find someone has swiped your satellite radio. You wake up, get ready for work only to realize a thief has entered your unlocked car while you were sleeping. Now you are missing your GPS and sunglasses, not a great way to start the day.
The overwhelming majority of thefts from motor vehicles in July were from unlocked motor vehicles. These thefts are crimes of opportunity. Are you doing enough to help prevent a crime? Removing valuables from your vehicle and locking your vehicle doors are simple steps you can take to increase your chances you won’t be victimized. The above victims were rudely reminded that if you fail to take these simple steps you can become a victim.
The majority of thefts from vehicles take place during the early morning hours under the cover of darkness and when a thief is less likely to be spotted. Does that mean I should chance it and leave my vehicle unlocked during the day? Absolutely not, some of thefts have taken place during the day. These thefts only take a few seconds don’t chance it.
“Huron County OPP officers are actively investigating these thefts and are attempting to identify those responsible. Let’s be proactive and protect our property as much as possible.†– Sergeant Arden Farrow Huron County OPP.
