Crime Mapping

Combating crime is a shared responsibility between the police and the citizens they serve. Beginning January 1, 2014, the residents of London will have access to see where within the city certain crimes have been reported.

The London Police Service will provide this information to the public through an online interactive crime map. This mapping feature will be available through a link on the London Police Service website. Data on each crime will include the offence type, date and time, and off-set address (mapped by hundred block, e.g. 601 Dundas St. becomes 6XX Dundas St.). The public will have access to crime data on the following offence types: thefts of vehicles, thefts from vehicles, break and enters, robberies, and motor vehicle collisions. Currently, the website uses some American terminology such as Burglary (this is expected to change but not by launch date). Occurrences related to persons offences (sexual assault, homicide, etc.) will not be reported initially while the London Police Service identifies any privacy or investigative concerns. A quarterly review will occur throughout 2014 to determine what other crime types should be made available.

Members of the public will have use of basic analytical tools that include hot spot mapping and time of day/day of week at-a-glance charts. They may also subscribe to Crime Alerts which will send an email notification when a crime has occurred within a specific radius of an address (radius, address, and crime types specified by the user). The information does not reflect the official statistics of the London Police Service. Offence types and related addresses often change during the investigative process. Not all crimes are reported, or reporting is delayed, and therefore not all crimes will appear on the map. The information is provided only as a general overview of crime with the city of London. Accurate statistics can be found at http://bit.ly/1kcVKHp.

Users will find that by clicking on an icon representing an offence, they will have the capability of linking to the Crime Stoppers web tip page. This information remains confidential as with all other Crime Stoppers tips, and tipsters cannot be traced.

A link on the website allows users to download an application for viewing crime information on Apple iPhone and iPad devices. Further information on applications of this software or how-to videos is available by searching RAIDS Online at www.youtube.com.

The London Police Service is encouraging members of the public to utilize this new feature. All suspicious activity should be reported to police immediately. Together, we can continue to make London a safe and secure community.
