Type: Fraud

Date: April 11, 2015

Incident: On April 11, 2015 a 70 year old woman reported to the BPS that she is the victim of a telephone fraud. The woman had forwarded approximately $2,000.00 to the United States believing that she had won the lottery.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BEING A VICTIM OF FRAUD:

* They will never ask a winner to pay any fees up front (like taxes or a

security deposit) to receive a prize, lottery or sweepstake!

* You cannot win without first buying a lottery ticket

* Never give out personal information/credit card information to an

unknown source over the telephone and/or unsecured email

* You can stop a telephone scam by hanging up

* When contacted about your personal accounts never click on a web link attached to the email to ‘verify’ or confirm’

* Confirm with family members or your bank before transferring any funds

* Never agree to give cash to anyone unknown to you in exchange for a cheque written to you by that individual

* Educate yourself by visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at www.antifraudcentre.ca, or call 1888-495-8501

If you have already sent funds and/or your personal information contact the police and your financial institution immediately. If you believe that you have been a VICTIM OF FRAUD and reside in the City of Brantford, contact the Brantford Police Service at 519-756-7050.

Type: Graffiti

Date: April 12, 2015

Location: Stanley Street (100 block)

Incident: On April 12, 2015 a report of Graffiti was reported. Sometime overnight on April 11, 2015 unknown person(s) spray painted on doors and windows at a business on Stanley Street.

Type: Theft from Motor Vehicle

Date: April 13, 2015

Location: Hardy Road (400 block)

Incident: On April 13, 2015 an investigation into a cube truck being entered on Hardy Road began. It is believed that sometime overnight a cube van was broken into at a business on Hardy Road. Business equipment was reported stolen. Video surveillance in the area is being reviewed.
