At Monday’s council meeting, a NH staff member reported to council
that the deadline for a government grant application is
approaching. North Huron has a road reconstruction and storm
drain project to do, at the cost of around $550,000. The
provincial government pays up to 90% of these infrastructure
projects, and local property tax payers pay the remaining 10%.
Staff told council some great news, the provincial government has
increased the fund from $51 Million to $91 Million. Staff also
reported that all the municipalities they have talked to (about 1/2
a dozen) are all applying for 90% funding, and that their projects
range from $300,000 – $700,000.
Council asked staff if they changed the application to 75% funding,
if that would increase the chances of the application being
approved. Staff clearly stated that it was impossible to know,
and that all the surrounding municipalities are asking for
90%.
Council asked staff if there were any benefits to asking for the 90%
compared to 75%. A staff member stated it would mean
you wouldn’t have to put eighty eight hundred on the taxes”.
Current Reeve Neil Vincent stated ‘even if it only increases the
chances by 1 or 2 percent that the application might get approved
