(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On August 14, 2013 at 4:04 pm, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a fraud from a resident in the Municipality of Brockton. An email arrived from “VISA†asking for information from the card holder. A response was emailed back containing personal information and banking information. A call to VISA established that the real VISA Company had no involvement with the email request for information.
The South Bruce OPP is again reminding residents in Southern Bruce County to be very careful with unsolicited contacts. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it.
Modern, tech-savvy, scammers can create very convincing documents and electronic messages that appear to be from a legitimate company. An established company is used in order to gain your trust. Always verify any unsolicited contacts. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year enterprise that will only end when the con artists stop making money. You work hard to earn your money, so work hard to protect it.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
