(North Huron, ON) – Huron OPP has investigated a report of a scam involving computer repairs. A Blyth resident called police after getting caught in a scam. The victim was contacted by an unknown person via telephone. The person had a very heavy accent and advised the victim that he was having trouble with his computer being slow due to viruses. The victim followed instructions from the caller about accessing his computer and then the caller seemed to take control of his computer remotely to fix it. This went on for a significant amount of time and at the end the caller requested payment. The victim offered to mail a cheque to the scammer but then a credit card number was provided. There were further calls from the caller and in the end charges were made to the credit card which were significantly higher than agreed upon.
Police are reminding the public to be wary of scammers. Be especially cautious of services being offered to you when you haven’t sought them out. If someone tells you that something is wrong with your house or your computer or anything that you own, do not agree to any repairs or provide any information on the spot. If you think the person may be telling you the truth about an item that may require repairs, YOU make the calls to trusted companies and get quotes for the work to be done. LP11082512
