In 2015, there were over 10 000 collisions in the City of London. Nearly all collisions are preventable and despite repeated warnings, educational campaigns and improvements in legislation, the number of collisions on an annual basis for the last several years hovers around 10 000. Distracted, impaired and aggressive driving behaviours continue to lead the list of causes of these needless collisions.
In September of 2015 the Province of Ontario increased the fine for driving while holding a handheld communication device to $490 from $280. Three demerit points upon conviction were also added to the penalty. Despite these efforts by the province, 2491 people were ticketed for this offence in 2015. In 2014, 2163 people were ticketed for the same offence. This is an increase of 15% over 2014 even though the penalties increased dramatically over the fourth quarter of 2015.

As always, we will continue to conduct proactive enforcement throughout our city and at many of these high collision intersections. The London Police Service is committed to making our roads as safe as possible but we can’t do it alone. We all need to be accountable for our own poor driving habits. Acknowledge them and work to change them. Together, we can make a difference in reducing the number of collisions on our road way. Be courteous and be conscientious. Poor driving habits in our young drivers are learned from the adults in their lives; their parents. Be the change you want to see on our roadways!
