On Friday October 7th, 2016, at approximately 8:18 AM in the cities East End (Lake Avenue North near Warrington Street), an 8 year old boy was waiting to be driven to school by a 72 year old family member in a green Nissan Sentra. Due to the overnight condensation on the windows of the car, the 72 year old man was wiping the front window when he allowed the youth sitting in the driver’s seat, to start the manual vehicle.
The vehicle started and lurched forward. The 72 year old Hamilton man attempted to stop the slow moving vehicle with his hands. As the vehicle travelled across Lake Avenue, the man appears to have tripped on the curb and was subsequently run over by the vehicle. The vehicle finally came to rest a short distance later after hitting a cement barrier.
The 72 year old man suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
The 8 year old boy was uninjured. The identity of the involved individuals at this time are not being released at the request of the family.
The Collision Reconstruction Team is continuing the investigation.
Any witnesses who may not have not spoken to police at the scene are asked to contact Detective Constable Niblock at 905-546-4753.
