Collision Closes Hwy 9 – 800 Litre Diesel Spill – Serious Injuries

(SOUTH BRUCE, ON) – On July 22, 2016 at approximately 5:17 a.m., South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Hwy. 9 in Carrick Township involving a freight truck and Volkswagen Golf vehicle.

Initial investigation suggests that the Volkswagen, which was southbound on Hwy. 9, entered the north bound lane into the path of the freight truck. In an effort to avoid a serious head on collision, the truck which was carrying 20,000 litres of molasses entered the ditch and subsequently rolled in a field. Approximately 800 litres of diesel spilled. The Ministry of Environment have been notified. The driver of the truck, a 43-year old Woodstock man, was not injured.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 24-year old Toronto man, was transported to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Hwy. 9 between Sideroad 45 and Sideroad 50 remains closed for investigative and cleanup purposes until further notice. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area.
