Collision At Stop Sign Controlled Intersection

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) – On Thursday February 18, 2016, shortly before 9 a.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were called to the intersection of Perth Road 163 and Perth Road 139 in Rannoch for a two vehicle collision.

Investigation indicated that a Chevrolet Malibu had been travelling southbound on Perth Road 163 when it came to a stop at the intersection of Perth Road 139. A Dodge Durango travelling west bound on Perth Road 139 the through roadway, neared the intersection of Perth Road 163, when the Malibu proceeded to enter the intersection directly in the path of the Durango.

The front of the Durango struck the driver’s side front corner of the Malibu. The impact caused both vehicles to come to rest in the southwest corner of the intersection. The 54-year-old male driver of the Malibu, a St.Marys resident was uninjured as a result of the crash. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The 31-year-old female driver of the Durango, a resident of Lucan Biddulph Township was also the lone occupant in her vehicle. She sustained minimal injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The male driver was charged with the following Highway Traffic Act of Ontario offences: “fail to yield to traffic on through highway”, and “drive motor vehicle in contravention of conditions”.

The Perth County OPP can’t stress enough that motorists need to be cognizant of their actions at the over 1,000 stop sign controlled intersections within Perth County. Many intersections have “two way stops”, which often control the crossing of roads with speed limits of 80 km/h. (The higher the speed, the greater the possibility of serious injury or death when drivers fail to stop and yield at these locations). In this situation both drivers were fortunate that the speed of the vehicle on the through highway was relatively slow (this is a posted 60 km/h zone).

Remember at stop sign controlled intersections, you must come to a stop, look, and avoid distractions. Driving demands your full attention.
