Citizen Gets Bike Back From Thief

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man following a theft investigation in Chatham.

On August 13, 2013, around 6:00 p.m. a 20-year-old man was travelling on McNaughton Avenue when he observed an unknown man riding a bicycle that resembled his bike that had been stolen earlier this month. The man approached the suspect who falsely identified himself and stated that he bought the bike at a local store. The man took a picture of the bike’s serial number as the suspect rode away and entered a store on St. Clair Street. The man then verified that the serial number matched his receipt. The man continued to watch the suspect as police were called.

While waiting for officers to arrive, the suspect exited the store and threw a grocery bag towards the man and charged him. The man grabbed the suspect in an attempt to protect himself and in doing so sustained several scratches to his neck.

Upon police arrival, a 34-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000, assault and assault with a weapon. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
