Children’s Footprints Found On Thin Ice

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) The Perth County OPP wants to remind parents to speak to their children about the dangers of playing and tobogganing near frozen creeks, rivers and bodies of water.

In Mitchell children have been tobogganing at two locations of concern. One is along the Whirl Creek, near the Demonstration Forest at Arthur St. South and Wellington St., the other is in the area of Adelaide St. and St. Andrew St. At these locations, children’s foot prints could be observed on the thin snow covered ice of Whirl Creek.

This winter the Perth County OPP has not received any reports of persons breaking through ice covered bodies of water, however with the onset of a warm spell this could easily occur.

The public is reminded that snow on creeks and other bodies of water can also insulate the ice below, causing ice to freeze slower. Parents are urged to talk to their children about ice safety and to urge their children to utilize safe tobogganing runs that do not end on any frozen water.
