Chatsworth Couple Survive Turbulent Waters

PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICES SAVE TWO LIVES

(TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – Two boaters are lucky to be alive today after the small vessel they were in, capsized in turbulent waters of Colpoys Bay yesterday. The Chatsworth couple were on route to Wiarton to store their vessel for the season when the mishap occurred.

The experienced boaters had all the necessary life saving gear on board and were wearing personal floatation devices at the time. The couple were spotted by an alert tourist who saw them in trouble from a vantage point on Skinners Bluff Lookout, and called police.

Members from the Bruce Peninsula and Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded the scene and advised the Royal Canadian Coast Guard (RCC) of the incident and intended OPP response. The couple had been in the water for nearly 30 minutes before making their way to shore. Neither required medical assistance. The OPP verified they had made it to shore on their own and did not require medical attention.

The police investigation into the matter revealed that the couple had all the required and necessary equipment on board and all was secured properly. “Being prepared, wearing a personal floatation device and having all the necessary safety equipment saved lives in this instance.” – Detachment Commander Wayne Thompson.

Police remind all boaters of the necessity to check weather and water conditions prior to venturing away from shore. This incident was preventable. This time of year conditions on the Great Lakes can change instantly, becoming very dangerous to navigate.
