The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 141 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Six people were arrested.
Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision CK15016989
Yesterday afternoon, shortly after 1:30 p.m. emergency crews responded to a collision between a Chevrolet car and a mobility scooter at the intersection of Chatham Street North and Hannibal Street in Blenheim.
The 41-year-old woman on the mobility scooter was transported via ambulance to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with life threating injuries and later airlifted to the London Health Sciences Centre where she succumbed to her injuries.
The woman has been identified as Jennie Verbeek, 41 years, of Blenheim. Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Verbeek.
The 33-year-old North Buxton man driving the car was uninjured.
The incident remains under investigation by the Traffic Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Constable Michael Pearce at 519-355-1092.
Man Charged with Assault with a Weapon CK15016979
Yesterday afternoon, police responded to a residence in Chatham in regards to a family dispute. At this time, a woman reported that her son had assaulted her and her other son. He also damaged property in the home.
The 18-year-old Chatham man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, mischief under $5000 and two counts of assault with a weapon. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Man Charged with Domestic Related Offences CK15017079
Early this morning, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Chatham. A man and his common-law girlfriend began arguing which escalated into a physical altercation.
The 22-year-old woman did not require medical attention.
The 20-year-old Chatham man has been charged with mischief under $5000, assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Traffic Enforcement
Yesterday, members of the CKPS Traffic Unit and Ministry of Transportation conducted a commercial vehicle safety blitz in Wallaceburg.
As a result:
– 58 vehicles were inspected
– 18 vehicles were taken out of service
– 42 charges were laid
The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to remind all commercial vehicle motorists that random inspection blitz will continue throughout the Municipality.
Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE)
Last night, members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service conducted RIDE spot checks in Blenheim and Wallaceburg. A total of 65 cars were stopped and checked. One motorist was issued a 3-day licence suspension.
