Safe Boating
The Civic Holiday weekend typically marks the middle of summer when boating is in full swing.
Statistics consistently show that alcohol is a factor in approximately 40% of boating fatalities. Please remember that intensifying factors known as ‘stressors’, such as sun, wind, waves and the rocking motion of the boat can greatly increase the effects of alcohol on the water.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service will be patrolling the waterways this weekend as part of Operation Dry Water. We would like to remind all boaters that open alcohol containers are only allowed on boats that are designed to be ‘residences’, with sleeping, cooking and washroom facilities. Drinking on the boat is only allowed when the boat is anchored or docked, never while underway. If your boat does not meet these requirements, then please ‘leave the beer on the pier’.
