Man Charged with Assault with a Weapon CK16002306

Yesterday afternoon around 1:00 p.m. police responded to a disturbance on the south side of Chatham. The man was in possession of two knives and while outside threatened two men near his apartment. The men were not injured.

The man was taken into custody and the knives were seized. A woman in the area came forward and disclosed that she had been assaulted by the man earlier in the month.

The 26-year-old Chatham man has been charged with assault with a weapon and being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The man has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Woman Charged with Theft CK16002330

Around 5:00 p.m. yesterday, the woman attended Dollar Haven on Talbot Street West in Blenheim. While in the store, the woman selected various items and concealed them in her handbag. She then entered an ‘employees only’ area and stole a wallet from a purse. The woman exited the store through a set of fire doors, making no attempt to pay for the merchandise.

Police were contacted and the woman was arrested a short distance away from the store.

The 39-year-old Blenheim woman has been charged with two counts of theft under $5000 and one count of possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000. She has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Woman Charged with Failing to Comply CK16002347

In September 2015, the woman was released from custody with several conditions. One of those conditions stated that she was to obey a daily curfew of 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

This morning around 1:00 a.m. an officer on general patrol observed the woman walking along Adelaide Street in Chatham. The officer recognized the woman and confirmed that she was still bound by a curfew.

The 18-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and charged with failing to comply. She has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man Charged with Fraud Related Offences CK16002297

Yesterday, an elderly Chatham woman contacted police to report that several cheques associated to her bank account had been cashed without her permission. Between October 2015 and January 2016, eighteen cheques were found to have been deposited into the man’s account. The cheques in total accumulated almost $3000.

Through investigation, police learned that the man had befriended the woman, also his neighbour, and removed a cheque book from her residence last fall. Luckily, a family member discovered the discrepancies in the woman’s bank statements.

The 73-year-old Chatham man has been arrested and charged with fraud under $5000 x18 and possession of a forged document X18. He was released with conditions pending a future court date of February 19, 2016.
