Chatham-Kent Daily News Release – 28Feb2017

The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 121 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Five people were arrested.

Update on Robbery in Chatham CK17006088

As previously released, on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 just after 11:00 p.m. an unknown suspect entered Charlie’s Variety Store located at 310 Park Avenue East in Chatham. The suspect demanded cash from the employee while holding a weapon in his hand. A physical altercation ensued during the exchange of money and the employee suffered a cut to his arm. The suspect fled the area and police were called.

Last night around 7:00 p.m., the 32-year-old Chatham man was arrested in Hamilton and charged with disguise with intent, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and robbery. He was transported to the Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where he has been held pending a bail hearing.

Man Charged with Mischief CK17006727

Last night at approximately 5:00 p.m. police responded to Walmart in Wallaceburg as staff recognized the man from a previous shoplifting incident and knew he had been trespassed from the store. When the man saw the officer, he ran out the front door and towards a car dealership across the street. The man then ran through the parking lot and jumped on the trunk of a Dodge Dart in an attempt to scale over a fence to get away from the officer. By doing this, he caused approximately $1800 in damage to the vehicle. When caught, the man resisted arrest by struggling with the officer and refusing to comply with the officer’s instructions. Control of the man was gained and he was arrested.

The 39-year-old Walpole Island man has been charged with mischief under $5000 and resisting arrest. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man Injured in Farm Tractor Fire CK17006700

Yesterday, just after 3:00 p.m. emergency crews responded to a property on Grand Avenue East in Chatham where a small farm tractor had had flipped over on a man. The man was attempting to remove an old pole from the ground with chains attached to his tractor when the tractor flipped on top of him. Gasoline started to leak out of tractor and onto the hot engine, which ignited a fire.

Once the man was freed, he was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and then air lifted to the Hamilton Burn Unit.

The Traffic Management Unit of the Chatham-Kent Police Service will continue to investigate this incident.
